If you or a loved one suddenly collapsed with a stopped heart (cardiac arrest), it is critically important that your heart is “restarted” in less than six minutes. Saving lives may depend on the arrival and proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and first responder personnel trained to use it. AEDs are portable units used to stop a heart during defibrillation so that it can regain a normal rhythm and bring a victim out of cardiac arrest. The use of AEDs during the first few minutes of cardiac arrest has proven to have significant impact on saving lives. These life-saving devices are safe, easy to use and a vital part of an emergency response process. Because of Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) programs, AEDs are now available in many public places.
